Abstract

The role of a founding religious leader is crucial in shaping the identity, institutional development, and sustainability of Islamic educational institutions. However, studies examining institutional transformation driven by local Islamic scholars remain limited, particularly in the context of Lombok, Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the institutional transformation of Al-Islahuddiny Islamic Boarding School in Kediri, West Lombok, through the leadership of Tuan Guru Haji Mustafa Khalidy. A qualitative approach with a biographical case study design was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis and were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was ensured through source, technique, and time triangulation. The findings reveal that institutional transformation occurred through three major dimensions. First, visionary leadership served as the foundation for institutionalization by establishing educational vision and social legitimacy. Second, educational transformation was achieved through the integration of traditional learning practices with formal education systems, accompanied by the development of more professional institutional governance. Third, institutional sustainability was maintained through the internalization of leadership values into organizational culture, enabling intergenerational transmission. This study proposes a model of Islamic boarding school institutional transformation based on the leadership of a Tuan Guru, emphasizing the institutionalization of vision, governance modernization, and value internalization as the principal pillars of sustainable Islamic educational development.
